2016 Miami Dolphins 7 Round Mock Draft (3rd Edition: Elliot vs CB in Round 1)

There are obviously lots of mocks out there for the first round. Most have us taking a corner, Vernon Hargreaves III or Eli Apple and then some have us taking Ezekiel Elliot to play running back.

Given Mike Tannenbaum's history, I wouldn't be surprised to see us trade back and pick up a second round pick or even more.  Did anyone expect the price that the Rams or the Eagles paid to move up to the 1st and 2nd picks?  I thought they paid a ransom.

What most mocks out there are not showing is the full value of our entire draft in relation to filling most of our needs.  We need a starting CB and could use a RB. If we draft Elliot in round 1, about time we get to our next pick, all the corners who are projected to be able to step in and start from Day 1 could be gone.

If we take the CB in the first round, we can still get a good RB later.  I think that will be the game plan for our draft this year.

Look at the following two drafts I just filled by utilizing a computer app to pick for the other 31 teams.  The value of any player should match the value of the pick used or at least be in the general neighborhood. You can look up the skinny on these draft prospects on either cbssports.com or nfl.com or any other number of other sites offering their opinions.

Elliot Draft:

Round 1: Ezekiel Elliot, RB, The Ohio State University
Round 2: Cody Whitehair, OG, Kansas State (the value for available corners was not worth it to draft one here, the top 8 were gone with a major run starting near the end of the first round and into the second round)
Round 3: T.J. Green, FS, Clemson (same issue for a corner)
Round 4: Jonathan Jones, CB, Auburn
Round 5: Sean Davis, FS/CB, Maryland
Round 6 Charone Peake, WR, Clemson
Round 7: Caleb Benenoch, OT, UCLA
Round 7: Lawrence Thomas, DE, Michigan State

CB Draft:

Round 1: Vernon Hargreaves III, CB, Florida (first CB off the board)
Round 2: Cody Whitehair, OG, Kansas State (top OG in draft)
Round 3: Derrick Henry, RB, Arkansas (surprised he fell, probably due to over 400 carries last year)
Round 4 Darian Thompson, FS, Boise State
Round 5: Scooby Wright III, ILB, Arizona
Round 6 Charone Peake, WR, Clemson
Round 7: Branden Allen, QB, Arkansas
Round 7: Caleb Benenoch, OT, UCLA

If we go Elliot and we don't get lucky with either CBs Kendall Fuller, Sean Davis or Artie Burns still available in Round 2, we may have to double down at CB later in hopes of getting one guy to be able to step up and start.

However, if we go CB in first round, we can still get a good RB later and utilize a Running Back by Committee approach.

What do you think??? Please keep in mind that all drafts are a crap shoot when factoring in the player's ability to stay healthy and if they meet or exceed their projected talent. No one knows for sure.

BTW...sorry for the delay in posting another draft.  Two weeks ago, I was at the Masters for the first time and this past week I had cataract surgery (so much for missing holding calls while reffing high school football)

Phins Up!!!

I don't see any corners at 13 being worth it, Elliot is a game changer who can run, catch, and is a nasty blocker. Personally if he's off the board my first round pick is jack Conklin, we need depth on the line and he can replace Albert in 2 years at left tackle, not to mention he shut down bosa and Buckner. I'd probably take Kenneth Dixon in Ed 2 then dbl up on CB in rounds 3 and 5 with scooby in round 4. Just my opinion tho thanks for posting

Great Comment. Your thinking is right on.

I like Elliot as well Jason. But he may be a luxury. Conklin would be a pick for the future that we would be happy to have made come 2018. Scooby-Doo is supposed to be the new Zach Thomas. Gotta love that pick. Dixon is a beast too. It just boils back down to trying to get lucky at CB and wacting another year to address it.

Good commentaryoung Jason.

Thanks David

Or did you mean to compliment Jason?

I like the second draft version.Hargreaves.Whitehair...This puts more draft picks on the field day one.

It does Jack. Plus a running back in 3rd or 4th round will contribute if not start.

Thank you!! Though to comment on Conklin, the thought is to start at guard not just a backup tackle who who in time could replace Albert. Love scooby as well, don't really care about his combine stats people said Landry was too slow to be an nfl player and worked well for us

I also get and support your idea about a starting CB, I hope we get Seattle maxwell because it's scary to bank on a rookie CB being our #1 starting CB, would still like us to add another serviceable vet

avatar

I think we can get a few vets for CB and LB as teams cut guys to make room for their top draft picks.

CB for me! The nfl is a passing league, so it is said. And yes, IF the Dolphins were one player away, EZ would make sense, but the Dolphins need more than that.

Elliot will be gone, sorry. Cowpokes or Bears are not leaving him there for Phins at 13. Need a taller CB, Jackson or Apple to guard those tall WR's in AFC East. Best available RB in 2nd, (Henry would be a miracle -Csonka-esque) Guard in 3rd, maybe Scooby LB in 4th, best Safety on the board in 5th and let's get it on ! Who really makes it at 6th, or the two meaningless 7's Phins got, who cares. If 5 can make the team, that's a ton. Maybe an undrafted FA - QB and OL depth after for training camp. This draft is key, but so is the further development of last years group. Perhaps Phins have real coaches now ! Oh, and come back Dion, put down the weed to play with you buddy Kiko ?

I like the taller CBs too Edwin. With the AFC East having so many tall receivers, they will matchup better. That's why, depending on how the draft plays out, I can see Tannenbaum trading down and still get Jackson or Apple.
