Dolphins Free Agents

With a new coaching staff, roster churning is inevitable. However, there are some players who have played out their contracts and have become free agents. Here's the list of Dolphins free agents with their last contract:

 UNRESTRICTED
DE Olivier Vernon  4-yrs. $2,848,080
RB Lamar Miller 4-yrs. $2,586,000
DE Derrick Shelby 1-yr. $2,356,000
WR Rishard Matthews 4-yrs. $2,153,612
 QB Matt Moore 1-yr. $3,600,000
DB Louis Delmas 1-yr. $2,250,000
LB Kelvin Sheppard 1-yr. $2,000,000
LB Spencer Paysinger 1-yr. $745,000
G Shelley Smith 1-yr. $745,000
LB James-Michael Johnson 1-yr. $660,000

RESTRICTED
C Jacques McClendon 1-yr. $745,000
TE Brandon Williams 1-yr. $585,000

GM Canamdolphin keeps Vernon, Miller and Shelby and lets the rest go. The Dolphins bean counters have to find a way to keep the talent they have and to make cap space for other needs, like offensive linemen. Fortunately, the free agent talent pool for offensive linemen is stacked.

There's also the matter of DE Dion Jordan, 4-yrs. $20,572,309, one year remaining at $5,143,077. Maybe the Dolphins new coaching staff will figure out how to best use Jordan, IF they keep him. Jordan is one strike away from early retirement. Maybe a switch to linebacker, a Dolphins weakness, can salvage his talents. There aren't many linebacker options in free agency.

Cam Wake, IR, signed a 5-yrs. $33,200,000 contract and has one year remaining at $8,275,000. The combination of age, 33, and injury will force a tough decision on the Dolphins. The cap hit for Wake is $9,800,000. Surely, the Dolphins are monitoring his rehab to get an early read on his chances to pick up where he left off.

Hopefully, the Dolphins keep their talent and find ways to add to it.

Not much $$ in the cupboard for Phins, but if they can retain their own guys - Miller, Vernon, Shelby and Matthews, get one vet Guard and draft another, they may be ok. If I am Gase, I quietly meet with Jordan and see where his head is. If Gase is such a brilliant mind as they say, maybe he can coax Jordan to play and get his head out of his arse, whether it be at LB or DE. What do Phins have to lose ?
They've already lost with Jordan.
Funny, Colts looking at Philbin for OLINE coach...hahaha....only point being that his OLINES were the worst in Phins history during his tenure...A.Luck must be cringing on that news !

I would only keep Vernon. Miller's production could be matched for 1/4 the cost, same with Shelby. Wake is getting too old and too expensive I would let him go as well.

Vernon, Miller and Shelby should definitely be resigned. My only concern about Vernon is he really turned it on in a contract year. In prior seasons he was an average DE. I'm really hoping they can restructure Wake if his rehab is going well. It's tough at any age to come back from an Achilles however at 34 it might be impossible for him to regain the speed and quickness that has made him so great. I'm not sure Matthews will come back or if the Phins even need him to. The jury is out on Stills. We have 2 studs in Parker and Landry. I guess it depends on how Gase views the the potential upside Stills has.

Hey, Ken! Good to see you again! Welcome!

Edwin, loved that Luck comment! Jordan is on his last NFL chance, maybe a new coach can salvage him.

Gary, let's look at it this way; Miller in a Pats uniform with a chip on his shoulder!

Neil, it did look like he was playing for a contract, but he sold it!

millers a stud and hes only 24!get him more involved in the offense and he will shine.if he had 2 guards to open holes he'd run for 1400.sign proven ol free agents and draft impact players in every round.letting our best players go in free agency is how we got here.jordan doesnt have the heart for the nfl.plain and simple.id love for him to prove me wrong.

Vernon and Miller would be my priorities, and I would let all of the rest (including Moore) go. Shelby is fine, but he would have to be brought back at the right price. I would rather gamble on Wake than cut him to keep Shelby. Matthews is a luxury, and will be overpaid somewhere else. Jordan is the biggest wild card of them all. He shouldn't have been drafted by the Phins as he didn't fit the scheme, regardless of how stupid he has been. I would try to make him an OLB on the pass rush side.

Thanks Kenny V and welcome to the pool.

Great post canamdolphin.

I would keep Miller if possible although he may get good offers elsewhere. Wake will restructure. Matt Moore could go. I like Matthews but he will walk.

We will have big decision on Vernon and Shelby.

Also, this is not as deep as draft this year as last two years so don't count on too many game changers.
