Why Kelley, WQAM & the Sun Sentinal should be ashamed of themselves

First and foremost, I refuse to follow Omar Kelley on Twitter because he is about as jaded a person as I have ever heard (or read) who follows and covers the Miami Dolphins.

Here are the two reasons why Kelley, The Sun Sentinal & WQAM should be ashamed of themselves:

As everyone has read, Miami has the worst fans according to a 3 year study by Mike Lewis and Manish Tripathi at Emory Sports Marketing.  Why do you think that is?   I agree part of it is the transplant population as described in the study.  However, in my opinion as a TRUE fan of over 30 years following my beloved Miami Dolphins, most of it is the media in South Florida.  Aside from John Congemi, Greg Likens (I realize these two work for the team), Joe Rose, Kim Bokamper, and Andy Cohen (as well as a few others), MOST of the news media coverage as it pertains to the Miami Dolphins is tainted by people who are bitter from years of covering a mediocre team.    I understand it to a point.  We were the highest winning percentage team from 1970 to 2000 of any franchise in professional sports.  We just expected (expect) to win.  I get that.  But to trash our team every single year before games are even played, it taints the perceptions of up and coming fans, the children of transplants, and the die-hard fans.   It is irresponsible to the market that depends on the Miami Dolphins.  And, it just plain stinks to the average fan to have to listen to you know-it-all trash talkers.  My son, who grew up as a fan refuses to listen to South Florida Media.  He says it is too depressing.  Your approach and message (for the most part) to Sports Media (entertainment - I might add) is depressing.  IT IS!  Kelley, and all the other naysayers are a cancer to South Florida, vultures of a sort to a proud heritage of a distinguished sports history.

Which brings me to another beef, the second reason Kelley and WQAM should be ashamed of the crap they aired last week in South Florida.  To call out Dan the Man as "an overrated QB" makes me sick.   It makes all of us fans sick to our stomachs...  Darrell Green, is a former DB,  who played for the Washington Redskins for 19 years.  He saw hundreds of QBs.   He is widely considered to be one of the greatest defensive backs to ever play in the NFL. Green was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008. The self-proclaimed "itty bitty guy," Green was nicknamed the "Ageless Wonder" by his peers and the general media for his remarkable ability to maintain a high level of play well into the twilight of his career. Green was also known for his speed and was one of the fastest players in the history of the NFL.     Frankly, I will take Mr. Green at his word.   He said Dan Marino was the hardest Quarterback to defend of all he ever played.  One of the best DBs in history, played 19 years, said Dan the Man was the Best he ever played against.   SHUT the HELL up Omar!  Dan is Royalty in South Florida.  You do not have permission to trash him for any reason.

Your Loving and Devoted Miami Dolphins Fan - We believe in you.  This is your year.  This is the best talent we've assembled since the 1990s.  Shut these trash-talking haters up this year!  Go deep into the playoffs.  We support you!

It's the sun sentinel who should be ashamed for hiring people like Kelly.

You are so right Mary! I just heard Omar on with Crowder, and the "overrated Dan" thing started and I just about lost it. So, my focus was on WQAM. Big O is not much kinder to the Dolphins. He is a Tannyhater, which makes no sense.

Speaking of Sun Sentinel, Chris Perkins said the Miami Dolphins roster was worse this year, a step down from last year. What nonsense. We are loaded for bear! I sincerely believe if the coaching is good this year, we should go deep into the playoffs.

Chris Perkins, I am calling you and Omar out. Just because you guys were friends with Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson, does not mean the team is worse off for canning their sorry, disgruntled asses. I liked them also when they were with the team. They are gone now. Let it Go. This current group is a perfect fit for the Miami Dolphins.

I personally have stopped listening to or reading anything Omar Kelly related. Maybe one day he will see his vomiting attempts to be the devil's advocate before he drives the proverbial last nail in his own coffin. His job is a privilege, in that speaking with and reporting news about our beloved Dophins. This time of year is about team building and chemistry within the team. His views aren't needed in my opinion, it's cancerous to our team.
Good Day
Fight the good fight Dolphins! !

Omar is an idiot.

avatar

If the dolphin are so bad to you omar, go follow kaitland(bruce) jenner, and write her/his story.

Well articulated... agree on every point.

Michael, that one is funny.

I like the truthfulness of Omar Kelley and Chris Perkins. They do not promote what everyone wants to hear. They tell it just the way they see it. They say what most people are thinking and are too afraid to say. That being said; the biggest mistake any journalist can make is to say something negative about a Superstar; especially if it is not true! Omar, you will have to try to survive through the heat that is coming until it fades away for making an untrue statement about "Dan the Man".
Dan Marino gave his heart and soul every week & every game, trying to make up for a subpar defense year after year. Then when we finally got a good defense which was materfully creatd by Jimmy Johnson and which lasted for about 12 years, Jimmy Johnson would not allow Marino to win games with his arm, as he had done for years. Instead, Jimmy wanted to try to win with subpar runningbacks. No QB could compensate for for all of those issues, But Dan Marino almost did it; which is why I KNOW that he is the greatest QB of all times!
So people, keep in mind, ALL journalists say things from time time that can be damaging to their career. (remember "Jimmy the Greek") Omar did not make as big of an error in his statement as "Jimmy the Greek" did; but you get my point. I do not know a journalist who has never made a statement that was damaging to their career and that they wish they had not said and would like to take it back. So, Omar be careful in your statements about Dolphin Superstars of Old. ( Dan Marino / Don Shula / Jason Taylor / Zack Thomas / Sam Madison / The perfect season cast players - Zonka / Mercury Morris etc!

David, we have disagreed before about Omar and Chris. And that nonsense about "too afraid to say" is ridiculous. Just about very columnist, radio host, and sportswriter has been shorting this team for the last 8 years. I am the voice of the positive fan experience. We are tired of the negativity at the onset of new seasons. Speak to the potential, speak to the young fan. If not, we create a generation of haters.

Madphinsfan, that is what columnist, reporters & journalist do. It is called sensationalism. Sensationalism consists of half truths, over statements and outright lies, to generate reactions and participation from the masses. They all do it. Especially when we are in the dead portion of season activity; and it works. However, the bottom line is, everyone wants the Dolphins to start winning consistently.

avatar

I'm just sick of him bitchin about 'This is how we do it".

avatar

If enough people boycott the Sun Sentinel and let management know eventually they will have no choice but to fire both of them. When it hits them in the wallet they will act.

You know what, Orlando Alzugaray, "The Big O Show;" I'm calling you out as well. You come across as this well-informed, long-time, Miami Dolphins fan who completely embarrasses any fan who comes on your show and expresses a modicum of optimism about the team, or the team's players, coaches and management. You too should be ashamed of yourself. Here is a Radio Host alert, Big O is trashing the Dolphins again. Show us some wisdom. Realize that you are helping to create a boatload of pessimistic, snide and sarcastic fans. WQAM, are you proud of the products you produce... Do you believe you do Miami any service? Or, is it possible WQAM is actually owned by some Nor'easters (who did the Beasley Broadcast Group trade the station to - CBS Radio, right?) who hate the Phins. If not, WQAM know your market and get a handle, manage your radio personalities. Express to them the importance of the regional fan experience.

Very good article and good comments. There are a few things I have learned from keeping up (somewhat) with the Dolphins beat writers:

1) Omar Kelly is is a jack of all trades, master of none.
-His grammar and spelling is horrible. Pay attention to it in his articles, it's horrible
-He thinks he is a scout and is constantly critiquing players and coaches. It's pretty entertaining. If he was good at it, he should be a scout and not play one
-He thinks he is a salary cap mogul. Again, he should be hired by a team!
-He says constantly "I have the right to change my criteria" meaning, when he is caught with his foot in his mouth, he can change things up in favor of his opinion.
-Omar Kelly is really proud of all his Twitter followers. I honestly think people follow him because they are drawn to stupidity and they like to argue with him. Not something to be proud of

2) Armando Salguero has the best "sources" in the organization.
-I thoroughly enjoy Armando's articles and blogs. He is very accurate, informative, unbiased, and is an easy read.
-he will bash the Phins when deserved as well as give credit when it's due.

The rest of the media don't matter to much to me. I suggest following Armando Salguero. He is a much better reporter and was around when Shula was here. He has reported for winning teams as well as the mediocre ones.

Yes, I have spoken to Armando a number of times. He is honorable. He has been known to get negative, but he will at least admit that it is because he is passionate about the team, which I know firsthand to be true. He and I used to e-mail each other back in the 90s. He has called me on a few things for which I was grateful.

I live in upstate NY and have been a Miami fan since birth. Living here surrounded by enemy territory (Buffalo, jets, and ne stadiums are all within 3 hour drives) I am forced to see and hear all the news on these teams. Just a couple weeks ago a couple writers for the Buffalo Bills got fired because of their history of "hate" reports, negative writing, and a huge public disapproval of how they spoke about "their beloved Buffalo Bills". Made me think " I know a couple a**holes that need to lose their jobs and get tossed in the trash with all their terrible opinions about my Miami Dolphins! "

avatar

Minceless words: Kelly is an idiot. Has always been an idiot, will always be an idiot. He reports with an inferiority complex, probably had something to do with Jason Cole. Dissing Dan Marino got someone to mention his name.... Horray for giving the idiot attention.

Armando has grown on me. I used to think he was a Dolphin Hating Negative Nancy. But he was usually right, and he clearly doesn't hate the team. As others have mentioned, he does have good sources - a side effect of working under Ed Pope.

But really, the whole point of this is that the state of sports reporting in general has gone downhill. It is not just South Florida, but the country in general. Most reporters are just like Omar Kelly. Le Batard even has his own TV show....

avatar

I've been a Miami Dolphins fan since the day I was born (March 2, 1985). Omar Kelly is an attention seeking man hating prick. He's always trashing the Miami Dolphins. I've never heard him say anything good about them. Chris Perkins is the same way. Maybe Cameron Wake needs to sack them and hit them so hard that they can't get up off the ground.

avatar

Omar is a joke! And so is Perkins!
