Philbin and Tannehill

I heard one of the local writers say about the dolphins yesterday something like "Philbin and Tannehill will be kept beyond this season, even if the team winds up 8-8"

His reasoning was that this is the best team Philbin has had and they're headed "in the right direction" and then added "well who else are you going to get to coach who's any better? And who gets to make that decision?"

I almost drove into a tree when I heard that. I laughed so hard.

Really? at mid season you know what the owner is thinking? Didn't he say that his expectation was that the team make the playoffs?

Missing the playoffs should be enough to open the door to the next head coach of the dolphins being announced.

Period.

Forgot my deal. Is there something he knows that I, or a fan does not know?

I Love how reporter speculation becomes fact when expressed publicly.

the only reasan i think he should get 1 more year is let him work with our gm 1 more year i believe 1 reason for not improving becouse we change our front office too much

I think Philbin needs game management work. Off all the coaches, I do hope we retain Coyle(DC), Lazor(OC), Benton(OL), & Bicknell Jr.(AOL)

If we go 8-8 I'm not sure how I'll feel. If we go 10-6 and miss the playoffs due to a competitive conference and Ross fires Philbin, then Ross is an idiot. It was stupid for the Bears to fire Lovey Smith after a 10-6 season (how's that working out for them?) and it would be stupid for Miami to do the same. But even at 8-8 I'm still not sure. I think one of our biggest problems is that we go into rebuild mode every few seasons. We will NEVER win a SB again if we keep doing that. I don't care who they hire.

And I know...Jim Harbaugh blah blah blah. Where's his Lombardi Trophy? Oh yeah....that's right. And he'll be lucky if the 49ers even get in the playoffs this year. Not to mention coaches have something in common with players: success with one team does not mean success with any team they go to.

@JeremyandJessica Branham:

So if Marino was in his prime and was available would you pass him up and keep Tannehill because Marino lost in the superbowl his rookie year??

avatar

Oh absolutely not Lawrence! If a prime QB fell to us in the draft, like, say an Andrew Luck type, I would probably fly out to Miami and fight somebody if they didn't draft him. I don't think Tannehill is going to be an "Elite" QB. Maybe a "franchise" QB, but that's not the same thing. Luck was a clear elite right out of college. So was Marino. I don't see anyone in this draft becoming an elite NFL QB though, except MAYBE Mariota. If he fell to us I'd say hell yeah draft him and see if he beats out Tannehill, but he won't slip in the draft so we're going to have Tannehill. The good thing is that we will absolutely know what we have in Thill by the end of the season.

If we're lucky, Tannehill will be like Alex Smith. That's his ceiling I think, but that's good enough to be a contender. If Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson can win a SB, so can Thill....with a good team that is.

@ JeremyandJessica Branham:

you missed my point, it was a reference and comparison to Harbaugh...

Chuck Noll was 12-30 his first 3 years at Pittsburgh. Had he coached today, he would've been fired. How did he work out.

Coaches need time to get their team together. Philbin needs and deserves another year no matter how we finish. We need 2 more studs on the O Line and a big quick WR.

He is growing as a head coach. We are very close to being a dominant team. We just need a few more pieces.

Tannehill can stay. If we draft a stud QB, which I wouldn't think we could even get were we are gonna pick, then move Tannehill to WR. But ain't happening anyway.

With 2 more lineman and a big WR for the red zone we are set.

@J&J Branham
I hear ya' on the 8-8, or 10-6 what to do?? Rebuilding MUST stop & let's give this core crew of coaches & players some time to know each other like family; so when TAN escapes the rush moving right, a simple gesture with Landry puts them on queue!!

avatar

@Lawrence a coach and QB are apples to oranges. Your reference is a moot point.

avatar

And a power back

avatar

@Carl,
I hear ya' 100% on the 2 OL! I think they are undervalued, and you can never have enough because they are so big that when they get in one of those rugby pile-ups, extremities are very easy to injure!

@JeremyandJessica

Do you know how many Super Bowl trophies Shula had when he showed up at Miami?
