How To fire Philbin

Ok I must be confused?  I don’t recall a coach ever on any team losing the team after a 1-2 start. 1-2!  They are 1 and 1 in the division and only one game back. You have to be kidding me right?  A few days ago I was thinking along the lines stay the course; we don’t want to look yet again like another clown show down in Miami.  Unfortunately, it is too late… Our O-Coordinator “cringed” at the mention this was his offense. I would cringe to if I was running 7 step drops and shotguns on 3rd and one. The coaching in the Kansas City game was probably the worst I have seen under Philbin. Ryan Tannehill has been ok but not spectacular. So what does Philbin do? He pulls his confidence and. What does Tannehill do? He speaks out against his coach. Ok so let me get this right. The Offensive coordinator is distancing himself from Philbin. Ryan Tannehill is openly saying that Philbin is causing a distraction and making it hard to prepare.   That is the most lack of leadership I have ever witnessed at record of 1-2.

Steve Ross, this is your team, you paid a ton of money for it.  The leadership of this team has cracked. We need you to step in and right the course.  Not just for the next game, not just for the season, for the future.  You simply can’t sustain wins in this league when the offensive coordinator and quarterback don’t trust the head coach. – I know it will make us look foolish to let a coach go right away in the season, but we looked like clowns this week already.   I know several people had wanted him fired but I have not seen anyone suggest what to do. I assume you have people advising you but just in case you want another suggestion…

Coaching - For this season- You can’t hire anyone outside because they are already coaching so we would need to use an interim head coach. I don’t think having Lazor or Coyle do it is wise, we need them focused on preparing game plans. I would suggest you assign Ken O’Keefe to be the head coach the rest of the season. I know him well from his days with the Iowa Hawkeyes. He would be very capable to handle the primary duties of a head coach.  You need a stable figure to bring the team together and he would be able to do it.

Quarterback – I would advise the team you don’t want the QB plan to be discussed in the media by coach or player.  I mean come on...   Right now what Philbin did is not fair to Ryan Tannehill and it is not fair to Matt Moore.  If the coaches want to give Matt Moore a shot I am fine with that, but give him a week to prepare with the starters and take the reps. What are you really going to learn pulling Tannehill half way through a game and putting a cold Matt Moore in probably against a defense that knows he has to pass.  Have a conviction on who you are starting and support that player for the game, don’t jerk both of them around

Looking Ahead – If Philbin is fired now it is going to make it harder to hire a hot commodity head coach next season.  Also, right now you are losing fan base like crazy.  You need to bring the fan base together and the team together. I think there is a man out there that is capable of doing this that will take the job. I can’t say he is the best x’s and o’s coach out there, he has been around. But I can tell you, he will bring your team together. This man is Mike Shula.  He would be supported by all your major fans from the 70’s guys all the way to current.  I think with a couple of solid coordinators at his side and he can give this team what it has needed for years, A LEADER.

Also, if the coaches do decide to switch to Matt Moore, I would almost require him to sign an extension before you give him that chance. We are in a horrible situation going into the offseason if Matt Moore is our starter and not under contract.  We are also, in a horrible situation if we are not sure if we are picking up Tannehill’s extension.  If Moore is extended you have a lot more options on what do. You can’t afford to not be thinking ahead is this league.

I for one do not have a problem with Philbin; especially if he is going to bench Tannehill. What Philbin did is not a distraction or concern to anyone but Tannehill because Tannehill wants to keep doing what he is doing; that is, blowing games with his inconsistences without any consequencies. 95% of the faithful want to see what Matt Moore has to offer with the starting lineup; and that is what Philbin should proceed with in London Sunday!

philbin is the main problem..hes horrible & has been since we got him..your team takes on the personality of the head coach our head coach has no passion just like the team he has horrible game management skills doesnt adapt to what the other team is doing and his team flatout won't play for him last two games of last year should have showed you that

avatar

&we already know what m.moore is capable of..he is not a playoff caliber qb but a very good backup..philbin has lost the team & cant find his ass with both hands..if we lose to the winless Raiders i have no problem giving him the ax..after the locker room fiasco&2game diarrhea slide to end last season there shouldnt have been any doubt

Gofins4sb, do you want him to be fired?

avatar

Philbin did not lose the locker room, HE NEVER HAD IT TO BEGIN WITH...

avatar

I know, let's drop Cam Wake in coverage !!!

And it just baffles me the people who REALLY think Matt Moore is the answer. I like Moore and I think he can play but he's not going to "magically" come in and take us to the super bowl. C'mon people.

I am losing faith in Philbin, not Tannehill. Tanny is still a young QB, with a bad O-line, learning a new offense with receivers dropping balls against KC on plays that would have been big gains to move the chains. Philbin decided not to call a time out at the end of the first half until like 20 seconds left WASTING opportunities to get it in the end zone. We are going to 7 step drops on all of our 3rd and 1 situations??? The receivers are not getting good seperation...Tannehill is being pressured almost every single drop back, and he's not always making the best decisions but when he does RECEIVERS ARE DROPPING balls. Philbin has lost me. I think Tannehill is playing below his potential because of Philbin. Now we have a young QB going out and playing with too much pressure instead of allowing him to go out there and just throw the ball. Philbin is an IDIOT! When Tony Dungy says Philbin is an idiot it must be true!

@ David Apollos - (For some reason thew reply button isn't working) - I appreciate you having an opinion but before you go spouting statistics you really should have them right. I have seen several poles and the "faithful" who want to see Matt Moore put in are no where near 95%. They aren't even in the majority! Just because you want to see it doesn't mean everyone else does. If you want to talk majorities....the highest percentage of polls I've seen show that people think Philbin is the problem. I find it interesting that you don't think so. That makes me wonder how much you really know about football.

David K, Philbin is not the problem beyond him allowing Tannehill to keep starting; and I will go back to my predictions from the last two games last year. I predicted that we would loose our last two games against Buffalo and the Jets, if Tannehill starts. Tannehill started both games and we lost both games badly. I predicted that if Tannehill starts this year, that we would be 0-4 at the bye week. Everyone knows who won the game against the Patriots and it was not Tannehill. So, by Tannehill's leading, we are actually 0-3. So,technically when we loose against the Raiders Sunday, my second prediction will have come true; 0-4. I predicted that if Tannehill starts against the Raiders Sunday, that we will loose that game. I predicted that if Tannehill starts the rest of this season, that we will not win more than 4 games. All of my predictions confirm that TANNEHILL IS THE PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!! We need to trade him now. Maybe we can get a 5th round pick for him. Matt Moore and Seth Lobato can carry us where we want to go this season.

Wow! you are the first "expert" (lol) who I heard say that Philbin isn't the problem. Sorry to say you must know absolutely nothing about football. I respect a lot of true experts and the vast consensus agree that he (Philbum) is problem numero uno. RT has some issues but he alone is not responsible for out problems. There is so many holes in your argument that I don't have time to explain it to you.

This week is showing a lot of dysfunction inside the organization to me Carl. If you go from Bully Gate and the Late Meltdown and now he is not working with lazor and Tannehill. It seems to be a trend that Philbin is not in touch with the psychology of his team. I think he works his ass off preparing. But he seems to struggle at adapting during games and to struggle at relating to his players. Last year we had the GO GO issue that I feel really hurt the team by basically giving the snap count. This year we have the mysterious 7 step drops and shotgun on 3rd and 1. If he has indeed lost the locker room, there is time to save the season yet. So yes I think it may be time for him to go. If he does not pull it together and they lose to the Raiders I would let him go right away and try to get regrouped during the bye week

I think you are right gofins4sb. I hate to see anyone fail but this gut needs to get his act together and quickly.

avatar

I said at the begenning of the season that he cannot adapt during a game!!! Its been like that since he got here! Remember having a 10 point lead at halftime against the Patriots last year in Foxborough? It ended in a loss. I would not even give him the Raiders game to prove himself, that is like having a varsity coach play a pop warner team and then after the win saying the varsity coach is the best thing since sliced bread. What I dont understand about your post and comment gofins, is where do you get that Philin is not working with Lazor & Tannehill? Did I miss something there?

avatar

I have heard some rumors ( granted they are rumors) that the locker room and organization are in turmoil, kind of broken into factions. Lazor I am assuming a bit from his reaction that it is his offense. Tannehill it is obvious since he spoke against Philbin to the media. Today I heard Ross is really upset with Philbin this week over the whole thing. That is why Philbin is backtracking. I do in football the cure for all this crap is winning. Everyone is happy when you win. I don't recall a game this big this early. If Miami wins I see them going into the bye week 2-2 getting Pouncey, Jones, Maybe Moreno, Getting minor injuries healthy etc. They will be a much stronger team against Green Bay. So basically they are right back in the thick of it. If they lose, I think there is a very real chance Philbin gets fired

Most of this seems to be much about nothing.... Today the team looked focused. The game plan seemed tight. The Dolphins did what a good team should do against Oakland - they blew them out.

I'm glad someone called out Tannehill. He needed to be called out. Despite all the criticism, it seemed that Philbin's ploy worked. I'm not surprised Tannehill didn't like it, but what did that matter? If Tanehill wants to be treated like Tom Brady, then he needs to start playing like Tom Brady. When he has another 20 or so games like today, then maybe he can start whining about the coach creating a distraction.

What bothers me more is the way this team is being managed from the top. Stephen Ross and (according to recent reports) Dawn Aptow are now going after Philbin. Reports are that they want to fire Philbin. Nice way to destroy the season.

The team is 2-2 and a half game out of first. Time for the front office to step back and let people do their jobs.

@David Apollos

SETH LOBATO???? You just lost credibility. Lobato has NO TALENT. And what do you mean "95% of the faithful want to see what Matt Moore has to offer"?

1. That number is totally fabricated. In ESPN poles, the majority want to keep Tannehill in and make sure 100% whether he is or isn't the answer. That's a fact. Not some number I made up because I'm in love with Matt Moore.

2. Did you just start watching football last season? We all know what Moore has to offer. A sub- .500 record. He played 13 games for Miami in 2011. With him as the starter, they went 6-7.

IF MATT MOORE WAS GOOD ENOUGH TO BE THE STARTER, HE WOULD BE.
