Ross Could Be Playing A Numbers Game

By not hiring a GM prior to the East-West Shrine Game and the Senior Bowl, Ross could be smarter than we are giving him credit for.

Sure you want to have boots on the ground and eyes and ears checking everything out.

By not having his GM there, is Ross being totally irresponsible?

 Guess what? He is not!

Ross actually has 7 sets of eyes and ears with plenty of boots on the ground anyway.

Every single candidate thus far plus every future candidate yet to be interviewed is there anyway scouting for their current teams.

Glad handing and meeting with other GMs and coaches and agents and anyone else our own GM would have met with.

Now, to Ross' benefit and ours, he can reinterview all the previous candidates to access their opinions on what and whom impressed them and how those players could fit in.

He is actually losing little and not having to pay someone's expenses.

 Hmmm...how about that.

Phins Up!!!

Who would everyone like to see as GM and why? I personally don't think it matters being that the new GM will have to build Philbin's team and not his own. Ross has given Philbin a lot of power which may not necessarily be a bad thing...

Never thought of that but you might be on to something. People are making to big a deal out of Ross being in London, then to China. Xanders, Hickey and Farmer final 3. I prefer X anders myself.

The GM is in a very good position. Lots of cap space. Good nucleus in place. Draft picks are OK and draft is deep in what we need.
It doesn't matter that much, Lawrence. All the candidates are coming from personnel positions not coaching. They are either good at picking players are not, no matter the philosophy. Now some talent will be better suited for schemes and where they are available may dictate selections. But if everyone is on board then you can build correctly. Its when there are differing opinions on how and whom to build with that construction suffers.
Remember the old adage "Too many cooks spoil the broth".

Jaxphin, I haven't had a chance to truly look at them all yet so I may be the last guy to ask. I did read about Farmer and he is very well respected around the league and the Cleveland press claim he should be promoted to their GM before they lose him.

Agree Carl. Ireland and Philbin had 2 different ideas. As long as the new GM coming in has the understanding that he has to build Philbin's team, I think we will be fine. As I stated on the last post, Ireland made some huge draft mistakes. Dion Jordan being the obvious name. Is a a good player? Absolutely. Am I happy he is on the roster? Definitely. Is it ironic that he is 3rd on the depth chart behind 2 young and promising DE's in Wake and Vernon? YES! Horrible pick by Jeff, especially with so many GREAT lineman in last years draft...

Well all that is behind us now, Lawrence.

I wouldn't doubt we don't even hire a GM this year. Let current personnel staff and Philbin have control. If they fall flat then next year you can go after Cowler or Grudin and give them the keys to the franchise so they can rebuild the entire franchise.

I have a feeling there is something more to it than just Ross traveling. They have interviewed all these guys they have to have an idea who the candidate is. I do agree with you Carl that they are not in rush as most of these guys have been scouting full time anyway. This is yet again establishing the new GM will not overseeing anything but evaluating talent. Two possibilities out there are that they have interest in a guy that is on the Broncos, Seahawks, Pats, Or 49ners and they are waiting to interview them. The other factor is the whole bully thing. Ross may be waiting to see what the NFL has to say before he makes a move. Although I think it is unlikely, I would not be 100% sure Philbin is safe. If the report back is Philbin was more responsible than was originally thought, then there could be a coach/gm combo come in to. I know it is frustrating to wait but I think Ross is waiting to have all the variables in front of him before he makes a move.

Gofins4sb, I would think waiting to interview conference finalists would make more sense then Bullygate ruling. Looking at Philbin's character, I just can't imagine him saying anything remotely considered bullying. If he told Incognito to toughen up Martin, IMO no big deal as long as he didn't tell Incognito to use racial and discriminatory statements and/or threatening him or his family. Unless Philbin is proven to have done any of those, he is safe.

I agree fully Carl. I would be shocked if Philbin was doing anything wrong. Just throwing out some possible reasons Ross is not in a rush. I could see him being a bit gun shy. PFT and Armando are on a mission to make the team coaching and management look bad the last few days.

We aren't in a must have a guy today position. Ross should take his time. No need to hurry this.

The press just has nothing much to write about gofins4sb, so they hop on this topic.

As I said above, Ross may not hire anyone and either the current staffs produce or he cleans the entire slate next year.
