First post from a long time follower...

Hello, My name is Lawrence, I have been following this blog site for quite some time and decided to put my 2 cents in! First I wanna say thank you to Dave for allowing me to post on here and also that I enjoy all of your guys' opinions and comments! First off, am I the only dolphins fan in the world that thinks Philbin in a good coach? 7/8 on challenges! I know its hard to see but you can sometimes catch a glimpse of him getting fired up over a call on the sidelines every now and then, I think the beat writers as well as 99% of the fan base has this guy pegged wrong. Secondly, I could not be more ecstatic that Sherman was let go. Philbin can now run the team the way he sees fit. He no longer "owes" anything to Sherman, not to mention that Sherman's offense was horrid. He was quoted during the season as saying, "the reason Ryan has a hard time hitting the long ball is because Mike (Wallace) has been hampered by a hamstring and we haven't practiced it that much." REALLY?? So Tannehill cant throw it to Clay, Hartline, or even Lamar Miller? I know that it will be hard to replicate the speed of Wallace but Lamar Miller was a former track star and is pretty darn fast!! What a cop out answer! Lastly, I couldn't be more excited for the Lazor hiring as OC. There are a lot of similarities between the Eagles offensive personnel and the Dolphins. Look at Mike Wallace & DeSean Jackson, both small recievers that take the top off the defense. Riley Cooper & Brian Hartline, NO COMPARISON!! Hartline is a much better reciever. Not to mention that we have a better recieving TE in Clay. The only thing the Eagles have that we don't is a 4 down back that can pass protect, catch the ball out of the backfield, and break tackles. I firmly believe we should strongly pursue Ben Tate this offseason. With 29 Million in cap space I think we could make it happen as well as strengthen out O-Line....

I totally agree. I like Philbin a lot. I think Lazor will be very good (I liked Shanahan a bit better), but Sherman just mailed it in, and anyone will be an improvement. Our LBs need better timing, our secondary need better timing and a healthy season. The defense will improve esp. with a new LB coach. We need hard work and an offensive line to jump-start our Offense. Look at our schedule and how we played Carolina, San Diego, New England, Cincy, Indy etc... Take the disruption (J Martin) away and give us better focus, O coaching and an O-line and we're in the mix

Welcome Lawrence!! Glad to have you on the team!

You are not alone. I like Philbin as well but he needs to get us into the playoffs next year. As I wrote two days ago, Philbin is growing more and more into the position and without Sherman around, you will see a marked improvement.

As far as replicating Wallace, just having someone else running routes or throwing to a spot is not the same as game day. There needs to be a feel by the QB for how the route will be run depending on how the corner plays and then also defensive line pressure. There were a some times when Tannehill did have time and missed him but on most cases he just didnt get a really good pocket to just step up and throw. You can practice all you want but the variables change each game. With the added experience, Tannehill needs to trust his instincts now and let it flow.

I agree with almost everything you said Carl except that Tannehill just didnt miss Wallace on deep balls. He missed Hartline, Clay, Matthews, and I even think Lamar Miller on a few wheel routes. I think it boils down to the fact that Sherman just didnt emphasize it as much as he should have, if at all. Although I think Tannehill will be fine with the new OC...

Well Lawrence, all I spoke about was the Wallace deep balls. Yes Tannehill missed Miller on a wheel route. I am sure every QB would like a few throws back.
Tannehill is still growing. Patience is needed. I doubt he will be another Marino, but with Lazor and better play from the O Line coupled with a decent running game, I believe he can reach elite status.
Our offense was simplified due to all the changes in the O Line. With some stability in that group you will see a marked improvement in the passing game.

Philbin will learn from his mistakes and be much better next season and he's the rite Head Coach for the Phinz! Letting Sherman go was the best thing for the Offense and THill moving forward, the QB Coach,Oline Coach and Defensive Coach also need to Bounce,Lazor was an awesome hire,he'll utilize our Offense the way it was meant to be used,an up-tempo, no huddle Spread Offense, where THill will flourish,Lazor will bring excitement and creativity to our Offense and put our players in position to succeed and put up points,I'm hoping we getta GM that knows how to Draft prospects and has an eye for talent,we were so close we're on the cusp of being great and making the Playoffs,we were rite there, Upgrade the Oline around Pouncey thru Free Agency and the Draft,Add a RB to compliment Miller,Resign Grimes and Soliai,Get LT Albert, RT Oher,RB Tate thru Free Agency,Getta CB to compliment Grimes and a Safety like Byrd to compliment Jones and have a great Draft too add Depth to our team and we're set to tear it up this upcoming season,Phinz are coming back with a vengeance!

I totally agree Carl, Tannehill can reach elite status with a decent running game. His stats were fantastic when we ran the ball and were balanced. We didn't even necessarily have to run well which we didn't do most of the season, we just had to run enough to keep the defense from playing the pass 100% of the time. I just wish Tannehill would have hit more passes of 35+ yards, but as you stated, with a better line and the new scheme it should help a lot. Hopefully Lazor implements the screen game in Miami, I'm a big fan of using 5-7 screens per game...

Well, I am part of the 99% that does not think Philben is head coaching material. I think he is a real disappointment.

avatar

OMG...how Sherman didn't call any screens at Buffalo was outrageous. He should've been fired before getting on the plane to head back to Miami.

avatar

Hang in there phinfever. Look at Belichick's career...fired in Cleveland after 3 years as head coach and 20 plus years as an assistant... there is a learning curve...even Parcells almost got fired in his second year with Giants...patience is needed

avatar

Well said Carl. I think Philbin's mistake was hiring all his friends on the staff when he first got the job. If he wins the division OR gets us in the playoffs next year I can forgive him! LOL. I truly believe Coach Turner the O-Line coach and coach Taylor the QB coach need to be replaced before mini camp. That will take away all of Philbin's obligations to his friends...

Great Post Lawerence. I agree with you on Philbin. I think he is the best coach they have had since Jimmy Johnson. Of course the coaches between Johnson and Philbin were terrible so it is not saying much. I agree with Carl on Tannehill. And in fact he did hit Mathews and Clay on some nice deep balls as well. My take is a lot of it is timing. He clearly has the arm to launch the deep ball. I really like the WRs core coming back this year. I really hope Binns and Gibson are able to recover fully. If they do we will be in great shape. I do hope that Tannehill spends all off season with them throwing routes. I think you will see some very solid improvement with Tannehill to Wallace and new OC. Just watching how the Eagles use D Jackson makes me excited with the new OC.
