Our Game With Patriots Just Got Bigger

And a hell of a lot tougher!

With Denver's loss to San Diego last night, the Patriots are now in the driver's seat for home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Prior to last night's game in Denver, the Patriots were sitting in the 2 hole with an opportunity to clinch their 11th AFC East Championship in the last 13 years by beating our Dolphins in Miami on Sunday.

Now both New England and Denver each have 3 losses, but the Patriots beat the Broncos 34-31 three weeks ago, so Brady and company hold the head to head tie breaker.

Sunday's game in Miami, is an opportunity for our Dolphins to not only stay in the hunt for the 6 seed in the playoffs but, more importantly, prove that they are more than just a pesky chihuahua nipping at the ankles of formidable intruder.

The Patriots are a proven commodity.  One that knows how to win games in many different fashions with many different faces.

Our Dolphins have plenty of talent but haven't proven much beyond they can win 4 out of 8 games which have been decided by 4 points or less. Those 8 games are the most by any team in the NFL so far this season.

That stat alone tells me 2 things:
1) The Dolphins are just 4 plays away from being 11-2
AND
2) The Dolphins are just 4 plays away from being 3-10

That pretty much tells us how this roller coaster of a season has gone. With last week's game at Pittsburgh completely encapsulating all that has occurred. Quick starts followed by bumpy roads, ups and downs on the scoreboard in a difficult climate with very strange moments culminating with a bazaar finish.

That is pretty much how 2013 has played out so far.

What Sunday's game will tell us is just how tough that pesky pup is.

It's not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog!

If our Dolphins are to take a dramatic leap forward then they are going to have to beat New England when the Patriot's stakes just got a lot higher for themselves.

And doing that would prove that Miami truly does have a dog in the hunt.

Phins Up!!!

  1. Wow Carl, you are wrong. San Diego winning helps us. If we are in any 3-way tie with Cin, Bal or/and SD- we get the final playoff spot. So, it gives us more chances to get in... We would have to lose 2 of 3 and SD win the last 2 for it to be an issue for us anyway. Remember this: if we beat New England, and Bal and Cinci lose one of the next 2 games. We clinch by winning 1 of last 2 games. Or, we can win 2 of last 3 and we will win the last spot. If we win 8 games only, I don't want to go to the playoffs. So, San Diego is not an issue in my mind. KC will want to win the division. They will smash SD. And, it will be over... anyway.

I bet our % chance of making the playoffs actually went up...

    1. Yep, Miami is a 54% chance to make the playoffs and Baltimore is only a 24% chance now.

    2. I am not worried about San Diego MD. I want to beat New England. I want them to know that we are in their face no matter how the rest of this season ends. If we want to win the division back, even if it has to wait till next year, I want us to finally beat them. And whip them bad if possible.
I am not concerned with any other teams other than Miami, New England and for right now, Baltimore.
I want us to get over the hump and not by default. I want us to win out and then if we get in, we get in. And then whoever faces us, look out.

    1. No, we don't head to head, BUT we do have it with SD in the mix. If Mia, SD and Bal are tied after 16 games, we are in.

    2. If Miami Baltimore and SD all finish 9-7 we would win, unless Baltimore only looses this week. That would make Balt and our Conference records the same. Tiebreak would go to Common games (no idea about that one) and then Strength of Victory, which, as of now, SD would win handily.

  4. San Diego winning is huge. I really did not think they would be able to beat Denver in Denver. We could actually lose to New England and still end up in the 6th seed spot after this weeks games. Basically if both the Ravens and the Dolphins lose this weekend we become the 6th seed. I totally agree with Carl though. We need to beat New England. It gives us momentum into playoff push and also towards next season. This a game that can represent the end of dynasty and the start of some solid seasons for the Dolphins. But San Diego winning really improves our chances at getting in if we go 2-1 vs 3-0 over the next 3 games. For an early Christmas present I want a Dolphins win and Ravens and Bengals loss
