Saw this picture posted on the Sentinel's website. Clearly, the Phins were running the wildcat since Ronnie Brown is in the backfield. But, there's a wrinkle. Cobbs and Ricky are in motion, but no one on the o-line is in motion...
Typically, the left guard will go in motion and block into the hole between the center and right guard, whether its a run or a pass. And while he's in motion the rest of the line is drive blocking for the run.
Here, the o-linemen are all in a pass protection stance. In the end, the blocking scheme is very different than what any team might prepare for. Well done!
And that would lead me to believe there are many more wrinkles we haven't seen yet.

I'm pretty sure they had this formation last year. Although I remember it more with Ronnie, Ricky and Polite. Especially since, I have a hard time believing the Dolphins would show a new formation in a public practice.
ReplyDeleteBut now that this photo is out other teams can prepare for it, unless... unless they wanted other teams to see this so that they aren't sure what they are supposed to prepare for and get even more confused... tricky!
ReplyDeleteThat would be my guess...the Phins *want* everyone to see something, and have to spend time prepping for it. If it was used last year - it may have been, I don't recall - that would just serve as a reminder that the formation and all its many facets are far from done.
ReplyDeleteCan forget that you can only have 1 man in motion too!
