1st pick in the draft

I was curious: what has history shown over the previous 38 years of first overall draft picks?

Well, 16 were QBs, 8 were DEs, 6 were RBs, 3 were DTs, 2 were LBs, 2 were WRs, and 1 was an offensive tackle.

And here's where their success lies:
• 2007 – QB Jamarcus Russell (Oak); jury is still out.
• 2006 – DE Mario Williams (Hou); a very good player
• 2005 – QB Alex Smith (SF); jury is still out….
• 2004 – QB Eli Manning (SD); traded to NYG; just won the SuperBowl, baby!
• 2003 – QB Carson Palmer (Cin); Seems to be pretty good, bow entering his 6th season
• 2002 – QB David Carr (Hou) – starting his 7th season with his 3rd tea,
• 2001 – QB Michael Vick (Atl); played 6 years before he paid a visit to the federal pen.
• 2000 – DE Courtney Brown (Cle); hung around for 6 years
• 1999 – QB Tim Couch (Cle); stayed in the NFL for 5 years. Never amounted to much
• 1998 – QB Peyton Manning (Ind); still in the NFL after 10 years, and playing great!
• 1997 – T Orlando Pace (StL); still in the NFL after 11 years
• 1996 – WR Keyshawn Johnson (NYJ); solid receiver for 11 years
• 1995 – RB KiJana Carter (Cin); injured his first year, but stayed in the NFL for 9 years of credited service
• 1994 – DT Dan Wilkinson (Cin); wound up hanging around in the NFL for 13 years, but was injured after his 4th season
• 1993 – QB Drew Bledsoe (NE); pretty good 14-year career
• 1992 – DT Steve Emtman (Ind); injured often, he stayed in the NFL for 6 years, but didn’t play much
• 1991 – DT Russell Maryland (Dal); 10 year career as a pretty good stalwart on the d-line
• 1990 – QB Jeff George (Ind); wound up being a “journeyman” playing 15 years in the NFL
• 1989 – QB Troy Aikman (Dal); good 12 year career
• 1988 – LB Aundray Bruce (Atl); had a nice 11 year career
• 1987 – QB Vinny Testaverde (TB); its unknown whether he will play again this season for his 21st big NFL season. Turned out to have quite the career. Who would have known?
• 1986 – RB Bo Jackson (TB); injuries limited him to 3 years
• 1985 – DE Bruce Smith (Buf); terrific 19 year career
• 1984 – WR Irving Fryar (NE); played 17 years in the NFL, that was pretty solid
• 1983 – QB John Elway (Bal); traded to Denver where he had a great 16 year career
• 1982 – DE Kenneth Sims (NE); had a quiet career for 7 years.
• 1981 – RB George Rogers (NO); was a decent back for 6 years

• 1978 – RB Earl Campbell (Hou); very solid 8-year career
• 1977 – RB Ricky Bell (TB); a quiet 5-year career (while Tony Dorsett was drafted #2)
• 1976 – DE Lee Roy Selmon (TB); was it his fault the Bucs were that bad for his 9 years?
• 1975 – QB Steve Bartkowski (Atl); had a pretty good 12 year career
• 1974 – DE Ed Jones (Dal); had a 15-year career around a one-year stint as a boxer.
