Miami had just taken a 10-7 lead with 5 minutes left in the first half. Minnesota started at their own 20, and on 3rd down, Brad Johnson threw a pass to Mewelde Moore at to the 29 yard line, and Moore was pushed out as he stretched forward. So, the officials ruled it was 4th and 1.
Minnesota lined up to go for it, and then Childress threw the challenge flag to challenge the spot. The play was upheld, and he lost a timeout.
Then, Childress went for it on 4th down and 1. They succeeded, and went four more plays before they had to punt it. Because, this time, they faced 4th and 4 at their own 38.
So, they challenge, then go for it, then a few plays later punt it on 4th and short. Very odd tactic, indeed.
